Introduction

PTools is a program by Vitaliy Keslev which alters the GH1's firmware update file, with a special hacked version containing unlocked and extended features.

This guide breaks down the use of the hack into 5 easy steps, showing you how to get improved video quality from the GH1 in terms of the codec (44Mbit AVCHD).

It is a bit like jailbreaking an iPhone.

Step I

  • First download PTools here. It is a Windows app but Mac users can still run it via Winebottler for Mac, available here - here which allows any basic Windows apps to run on a Mac.
  • Secondly download the latest official Panasonic firmware, version 1.32 from here

Step II

  • Double-click PTools.exe on your computer (Windows) or use Winebottler to run it on a Mac.
  • Now inside PTools, click on Load Firmware and select the official Panasonic GH1__132.BIN file you downloaded earlier
  • A list of setup options will now appear

Step III

  • Click to tick Version Increment if this the first time you have updated the camera. Leave the increment value as '1'.
  • Tick Version Compare too.

Step IV

  • Double click Patches for End Users
  • Expand the notch which reads AVCHD Movie Mode (as shown in screen grab, right)
  • Tick Native 24p/25p
  • Tick Video Bitrate FHD/SH
  • Under Video Bitrate FHD/SH enter the value 50000000 (50,000,000)
  • Tick Overall Bitrate
  • Under Overall Bitrate enter the value 52000000 (52,000,000)

Final Step

  • Click Save Firmware
  • Name your custom firmware file GH1__133.BIN (with 2 underscores, all upper-case)
  • Copy this to your memory card (outside all folders) and insert the card into the GH1.
  • Turn on the GH1 and press playback. The update firmware screen will appear. Press OK and wait 1 minute.
  • The update is now complete
